Autumn Reading: Sew Charming Fall Fabric Bookmarks
Create thoughtful teacher gifts and reading motivation with seasonal leaf and acorn appliqués

I started making fabric bookmarks as teacher appreciation gifts and discovered they're one of those perfect handmade presents that people actually use and treasure! There's something so thoughtful about creating a bookmark that celebrates the season while encouraging reading – these little fabric treasures have become my go-to gift for teachers, librarians, and book-loving friends. The fall leaf and acorn appliqués make them feel extra special and seasonal, turning an ordinary bookmark into a piece of functional art that makes every reading session feel more cozy. What I love most is watching kids get excited about reading when they have their own special bookmark to use, and teachers always tell me these become their most cherished desk accessories. Making a whole set takes just one afternoon, but the smiles and appreciation they generate last all season long!

Sewing Steps
- Cut bookmarks to 2" x 6" from base fabric, adding seam allowances
- Trace leaf and acorn shapes onto appliqué fabrics using templates
- Apply fusible interfacing to wrong side of base fabric for stability
- Position appliqué pieces on bookmark fronts and fuse according to directions
- Stitch around appliqué edges using decorative or zigzag stitching
- Layer front and back pieces right sides together, pin carefully
- Sew around edges leaving small opening for turning, trim corners
- Turn right side out, add ribbon tassels, and topstitch for professional finish
Professional seamstresses know that the secret to appliqué work that looks expensive is all in the stitch selection and thread choice. Here's my signature technique: use a blanket stitch in contrasting thread color for a hand-sewn look, or invisible thread with a narrow zigzag for subtle, professional edges. My favorite finishing touch is adding a small ribbon loop at the top instead of a tassel – it creates a clean, sophisticated look that teachers especially appreciate. Pro tip: make templates from cardboard so you can trace multiple shapes quickly and consistently. Also, consider adding a small fabric label with the year or a sweet message like "Happy Reading!" – these personal touches turn simple bookmarks into treasured keepsakes that recipients will use and remember for years!
