Budget Magic: Build a Winter Village Display for Under $10

Transform dollar store finds into a professional multi-level holiday showcase

Multi-level winter village display with miniature houses on white foam board platforms covered in fluffy cotton batting snow
DIY PROJECTS

Those charming Christmas village displays you see in magazines always look expensive and complicated, but here's a secret—you can create the exact same professional multi-level effect using nothing but dollar store foam boards and cotton batting. The key is building varying heights that give your village dimensional interest instead of lining everything up flat on a single surface. This simple project costs under $10 and takes about an hour to assemble, yet transforms your holiday village from basic to breathtaking by adding depth, drama, and that magical snow-covered landscape look. The best part is these platforms are lightweight, completely reusable year after year, and can be sized to fit any space from a narrow console table to an expansive mantel display. No special skills required—if you can stack boxes and drape fabric, you can create a winter wonderland that looks like you hired a professional decorator.

What You'll Need

  • Platform Materials:
    • White foam boards, 3-4 sheets ($1.25 each)
    • Small cardboard boxes for risers (free from recycling)
    • Cotton batting or polyester fiberfill ($1.25-2.50)
  • Assembly Tools:
    • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • Utility knife or box cutter
    • Ruler or measuring tape
    • Scissors for cutting batting
  • Optional Enhancements:
    • LED tea lights for hidden glow ($1.25)
    • Artificial snow or glitter for sparkle ($1.25)
    • Small mirrors for "frozen pond" effect ($1.25)

Building Steps

  1. Measure your display area and plan your village layout, deciding where taller buildings should go and how many elevation levels will create the most visual interest for your space.
  2. Cut foam boards into platforms of varying sizes—create at least three different levels with the back tier highest, middle tier medium height, and front tier lowest for proper sightlines.
  3. Stack cardboard boxes or fold foam board pieces to create risers of different heights, positioning them where you want elevated platforms to add dimension to your village scene.
  4. Secure foam board platforms onto your risers using hot glue, making sure each level is stable and won't tip when you place village pieces on top.
  5. Drape cotton batting over the entire platform structure, pulling it gently to create natural-looking snow drifts and hills rather than laying it completely flat and smooth.
  6. Tuck batting edges underneath platforms or secure with small dots of hot glue where needed, keeping all raw edges hidden for that seamless, professional appearance.
  7. Arrange your village buildings on the platforms, placing taller structures on back tiers and smaller pieces toward the front so everything remains visible and creates depth in your display.
  8. Enhance with optional touches like LED tea lights hidden under batting for a soft glow, artificial snow for extra sparkle, or small mirror pieces positioned as frozen ponds between buildings.
DESIGNER TIP

Professional display designers create the most realistic snow effect by layering batting rather than using a single thick piece—start with a base layer pulled smooth, then add loose tufts on top for texture and dimension. For dramatic impact, stagger your platform depths by at least 2-3 inches between levels so each tier is clearly visible rather than creating subtle height changes that get lost visually. If you want to add a pathway through your village, pull the batting apart slightly to reveal the white foam board underneath, then line this "path" with tiny twigs or miniature fencing from craft stores. Store your entire platform system by simply rolling it up with the batting attached—next year you can unroll it, fluff the cotton back into shape, and have your display base ready in minutes instead of rebuilding from scratch.
