Cozy Corner: Building a Window Seat with Hidden Storage
Create the perfect reading nook that maximizes both comfort and space

Window seats are the ultimate blend of form and function—transforming unused window space into an inviting reading nook while simultaneously adding valuable hidden storage. This weekend project turns an ordinary window into a charming focal point that maximizes every inch of your home.
What You'll Need
Base cabinets or 3/4" plywood for custom cabinet
3/4" plywood for seating surface
2x4 lumber for frame (if not using cabinets)
Medium-density foam (3" thick)
Upholstery fabric for cushion
Piano hinges or lid supports
Trim pieces to match existing molding
Paint to match your room
Decorative pillows for styling
How To Build It
- Measure your space - Take precise measurements of your window nook. Standard window seat height is 18-20" with a depth of 16-20".
- Choose your base - For easiest installation, use pre-made base cabinets. For custom dimensions, build a frame with 2x4s.
- Install the base - Secure cabinets or custom frame to wall studs and floor. Ensure the structure is level and sturdy.
- Create a lid - Cut plywood to size for your seat, then attach piano hinges or lid supports to allow for easy access to storage.
- Add cushioning - Cut foam to match your seat dimensions. For extra comfort, wrap foam in batting before covering with fabric.
- Upholster the cushion - Wrap fabric around foam and plywood, stapling underneath. For a removable cushion, create a cover with a zipper.
- Add trim - Install decorative trim around the base to match your existing moldings and create a built-in look.
- Paint and style - Paint all exposed wood to match your room, then add pillows and throws to create an inviting reading nook.
For a polished look, consider installing wall sconces on either side of your window or running low-voltage LED lighting underneath the window seat for a soft glow at night. If your window seat will receive direct sunlight, choose fade-resistant fabric for your cushion and add thermal-lined curtains or blinds to protect both your upholstery and the interior of your storage compartment from sun damage.
