Scent of Spring: DIY Floral Sachets for Home

Create charming fabric sachets filled with dried flowers to bring subtle spring aromas to your closets and drawers

Handmade fabric sachets with dried lavender and rose petals
DIY PROJECTS

Scented sachets are small fabric pouches filled with dried flowers and herbs that release gentle fragrance throughout your home. These charming accessories not only provide a subtle spring aroma to drawers, closets, and linen cupboards but also serve as natural moth deterrents and air fresheners. Creating your own custom sachets allows you to personalize the scents, fabrics, and designs to perfectly complement your home while adding a touch of handcrafted elegance.

What You'll Need

Fabric and Sewing Supplies:
• Cotton or linen fabric squares (6" x 6")
• Matching thread
• Needle or sewing machine
• Scissors
• Pins
• Ribbon or string (6-8" per sachet)
Fillings:
• Dried lavender buds
• Dried rose petals
• Dried herbs (rosemary, mint, thyme)
• Essential oils (optional, for stronger scent)
• Rice or flax seeds (as filler)
Decorative Elements (Optional):
• Fabric stamps or paints
• Embroidery floss
• Small buttons or beads
• Iron-on transfers or patches

How To Do It

  1. Prepare your fabric: Iron your fabric squares to remove any wrinkles. If using decorative elements like stamps or embroidery, add these first before assembling the sachets.
  2. Create the sachet pouch: Place two fabric squares right sides together. Pin around three sides, leaving one side open. Sew the three pinned sides with a 1/4" seam allowance, either by hand or machine.
  3. Turn and press: Turn the pouch right side out through the open end. Use a pencil or chopstick to gently push out the corners. Press the seams flat with an iron.
  4. Mix your filling: In a bowl, combine your chosen dried flowers and herbs. For lavender sachets, mix 2 parts lavender buds with 1 part rice as a filler. For rose sachets, combine dried rose petals with a small amount of rosemary for longevity. Add 2-3 drops of matching essential oil if desired for a stronger scent.
  5. Fill the sachet: Spoon the filling mixture into the sachet pouch, filling it about 3/4 full to allow room for closing. Don't overfill, as the sachet should remain somewhat flexible.
  6. Close the pouch: Fold in the raw edges of the open side and pin closed. Sew the opening shut with a small, neat stitch either by hand or machine.
  7. Add finishing touches: Tie a small ribbon or string around the sachet, or sew a loop for hanging in closets. You can also add a small tag with the contents listed if giving as a gift.
DESIGNER TIP

For a professional touch that elevates your sachets beyond basic crafts, consider creating a themed collection using coordinating fabrics rather than identical ones. Interior designers often group complementary patterns—try a solid, a small print, and a larger pattern in the same color family. For longevity, use a double-pouch construction method: create a plain inner pouch filled with your scented mixture, then an outer decorative cover that can be removed and washed. This allows you to refresh the filling without remaking the entire sachet. Finally, consider unexpected shapes beyond the standard square—try circles, hearts, or even custom silhouettes that reflect seasonal themes like flowers or butterflies.
