School Style: Sew Personalized Pencil Cases Kids Love

Create special zipper pouches that make school supplies personal and easy to spot

Colorful handmade personalized pencil cases with children's favorite fabrics and zippers filled with school supplies
DIY PROJECTS

I started making personalized pencil cases when I got tired of my kids constantly losing their school supplies or accidentally grabbing someone else's identical store-bought pouch! There's something so special about seeing their faces light up when they realize their pencil case is made from their absolute favorite fabric – suddenly, keeping track of school supplies becomes something they actually care about. These little zippered pouches have become treasured possessions that my kids show off proudly to friends and teachers, and the best part is how easily identifiable they are in a sea of generic supplies. The process of choosing fabrics together and watching their personalities shine through in their custom cases has become one of our favorite back-to-school traditions. Now I actually look forward to making these each year because I know they'll use them daily and think of home every time they reach for a pencil!

Fabric & Supplies

  • Outer Fabric: Each child's favorite cotton prints - animals, sports, florals (¼ yard each, $5-12)
  • Lining Fabric: Coordinating solid colors or fun patterns for inside ($3-8 per yard)
  • Interfacing: Medium-weight fusible interfacing for structure and durability ($5-8)
  • Zippers: 9-10 inch zippers in colors that match or contrast with fabric ($2-4 each)
  • Thread: Coordinating colors for each child's case ($5-10 total)
  • Labels: Iron-on name labels or fabric markers for personalization ($3-8)
  • Total Per Case: $15-30 depending on fabric choices and embellishments

Sewing Steps

  1. Cut fabric pieces to 10" x 7" for both outer fabric and lining materials
  2. Apply interfacing to wrong side of outer fabric following manufacturer's directions
  3. Pin zipper face-down to right side of outer fabric, aligning raw edges
  4. Sew zipper in place using zipper foot, then attach lining piece over zipper
  5. Repeat process for other side of zipper with remaining fabric pieces
  6. Open zipper halfway, then sew around three sides leaving zipper opening
  7. Trim corners and turn right side out through zipper opening
  8. Add name labels or decorative stitching for final personalization touch
DESIGNER TIP

Professional seamstresses know that the secret to pencil cases that last all school year is reinforcement at stress points. Here's my signature technique: add an extra strip of interfacing at the zipper ends where most wear occurs, and backstitch over zipper stops for durability. My favorite personalization trick is letting each child choose a special button or small charm to attach as a zipper pull – it makes their case instantly recognizable and adds that special handmade touch. Pro tip: make the lining fabric different from the outer fabric so kids can easily see their supplies inside. Also, consider making matching cases in different sizes – one for pencils, one for erasers and small supplies – so everything has its perfect place and nothing gets lost in the bottom of backpacks!
