Space-Saving Style: DIY Sliding Barn Doors
Add rustic charm and practical functionality to any doorway

Sliding barn doors aren't just for farmhouses anymore. These stylish, space-saving solutions work beautifully in any home where you want to add character while maximizing floor space. Unlike traditional swing doors that require clearance to open and close, barn doors slide along the wall, making them perfect for tight spaces, closets, bathrooms, or room dividers. With countless design options from rustic reclaimed wood to sleek contemporary panels, you can create a custom look that perfectly complements your home's style.
Materials
Barn door hardware kit (track, rollers, stops)
Wood for door (or pre-made door slab)
Stud finder
Level, drill, and appropriate screws
Paint or stain and finishing supplies
Door handle or pull
Method
- Measure your doorway and prepare a door that's 1-2 inches wider on each side and taller than your opening.
- Locate and mark wall studs above your doorway where you'll mount the track hardware.
- Install the mounting board (if needed) and track, ensuring it's perfectly level for smooth operation.
- Attach rollers to the top of your door according to the hardware kit instructions.
- Hang the door on the track and install door stops, floor guides, and pulls for a complete installation.
For a truly unique barn door, consider unexpected materials beyond traditional wood. Try repurposing old architectural elements like antique fireplace mantels, vintage window frames with frosted glass inserts, or even metal panels for an industrial look. If privacy is a concern, install rubber bumpers where the door meets the wall and add a simple hook-and-eye latch on the inside. For bathrooms, consider a soft-close mechanism to prevent slamming.
