Spring Window Deep Clean: Let the Light Flood Back In

Reclaim the sunshine with streak-free windows, fresh screens, and spotless sills

Sparkling clean windows with bright sunlight streaming through, cleaning supplies and squeegee visible on windowsill
HOME IMPROVEMENT

You don't realize how much winter grime has accumulated on your windows until you actually clean them and suddenly your entire house feels brighter, bigger, and more alive. Months of rain, snow, dust, and indoor condensation create a surprisingly thick film that blocks way more natural light than you'd think, and as the days grow longer heading into spring, clean windows make the most of every precious ray of sunshine. I used to dread this task until I discovered the right technique makes it genuinely satisfying rather than frustrating—there's something deeply rewarding about watching streaks disappear and crystal-clear glass emerge. The whole house deep clean takes just 2-3 hours for a typical home, costs under $15 in supplies if you're starting from scratch, and the difference in natural light and overall home brightness is immediate and dramatic. Think of it as removing the filter you didn't know was dimming your entire living space.

What You'll Need

  • White vinegar: 1 cup for homemade cleaning solution ($2-3)
  • Dish soap: Just a few drops, use what you have (essentially free)
  • Spray bottle: For applying cleaning solution ($1-2, or reuse one you own)
  • Squeegee: 10-12 inch blade with rubber edge for streak-free results ($5-8)
  • Microfiber cloths: 3-4 cloths for wiping and buffing ($4-6 for a pack)
  • Bucket with warm water: For rinsing cloths and cleaning frames
  • Old toothbrush: For scrubbing window track gunk and sill corners
  • Vacuum with brush attachment: For screens and sills
  • Step stool or ladder: For reaching top sections safely
  • Newspaper or lint-free towels: For final buffing if needed

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Mix your cleaning solution by combining 1 cup white vinegar with 1 cup warm water plus 2-3 drops of dish soap in your spray bottle—this cuts through grime without leaving residue like commercial cleaners often do
  2. Remove and clean screens first by popping them out of their frames, vacuuming both sides with your brush attachment, then gently washing with soapy water and leaning them against an outdoor wall to dry completely
  3. Vacuum window sills and tracks thoroughly using your brush attachment to remove dead bugs, dust, and debris that's accumulated in corners and channels—this prevents turning dry dirt into muddy streaks
  4. Scrub tracks and frames with your old toothbrush dipped in cleaning solution, getting into the grooves and corners where grime builds up thickest, then wipe clean with a damp microfiber cloth
  5. Spray windows generously with your vinegar solution, working on one window at a time and covering the entire glass surface including edges—don't be stingy, you want enough liquid to loosen all the dirt
  6. Squeegee in overlapping strokes starting at the top corner and pulling straight down, wiping the blade with a clean cloth after each stroke to prevent redistributing dirt across the clean glass
  7. Wipe edges and corners with a dry microfiber cloth to catch any remaining moisture and eliminate water spots before they dry—pay special attention to bottom edges where water pools
  8. Buff for perfection by inspecting the dried window from different angles and using crumpled newspaper or a clean microfiber cloth to buff away any remaining streaks or spots until the glass is completely clear
DESIGNER TIP

Professional window cleaners never work in direct sunlight because the heat causes cleaning solution to dry too quickly, leaving stubborn streaks before you can squeegee—choose an overcast day or work on shaded sides of your house first. The secret to truly streak-free windows is the squeegee technique: overlap each stroke by about an inch and always pull in the same direction rather than going back and forth. For windows with divided panes or multiple small sections, skip the squeegee entirely and use the microfiber cloth method—spray, wipe in circular motions, then buff dry with a second clean cloth. Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to your cleaning solution for extra streak-fighting power on particularly stubborn windows. Clean your exterior windows first while you have energy and motivation, then tackle interiors—you'll notice spots and streaks more easily from inside, and can touch them up without having to go back outside. The most overlooked step is cleaning the window tracks thoroughly before you start on the glass; otherwise, you're just smearing around concentrated dirt when rainwater inevitably finds its way inside.
