Selection & Installation Guide
- Assess your needs. Consider what function you want your window treatments to serve: privacy, light control, insulation, decoration, or a combination of these factors.
- Measure carefully. For inside mounts, measure the window opening's width and height in three places and use the smallest measurement. For outside mounts, add 2-3 inches on each side for proper coverage.
- Consider mounting height. Install curtain rods 4-6 inches above window frames and extend 6-10 inches beyond the window on each side to make windows appear larger and maximize light.
- Select appropriate length. For a tailored look, curtains should just touch the floor or have a slight "break" of 1/2 inch. For a more dramatic effect, allow 1-3 inches of fabric to "puddle" on the floor.
- Layer for flexibility. Combine treatments for both function and style—for example, pair blinds or shades with decorative side panels for adjustable light control with a finished look.
- Consider room specifics. Choose moisture-resistant options for bathrooms and kitchens, room-darkening treatments for bedrooms, and light-filtering solutions for living spaces.
- Install with precision. Use a level to ensure rods and hardware are straight. For heavier treatments, be sure to anchor into wall studs or use appropriate wall anchors.
To create the illusion of taller ceilings and larger windows, mount curtain rods close to the ceiling rather than just above the window frame. Choose curtains with vertical stripes or patterns to enhance the heightening effect. For a cohesive look throughout your home, maintain the same style of window treatment in rooms that are visible to each other, while varying the specific color or material to suit each room's function and design scheme.
