Winter in a Jar: Create Charming DIY Snow Globes
Capture holiday magic in miniature with personalized snow-filled scenes

There's something magical about watching the swirling "snow" inside a snow globe settle around a miniature winter scene. Creating your own custom snow globes allows you to design one-of-a-kind holiday decorations or gifts while capturing special memories or themes. With simple materials and a bit of creativity, you can craft enchanting snow-filled worlds that delight both children and adults alike. These whimsical decorations make perfect mantel accents, thoughtful gifts, or activity-based keepsakes.
Snow Globe Essentials
• Mason jars with tight-fitting lids
• Waterproof figurines (1-3 inches tall)
• Distilled water
• Glycerin (available at pharmacies)
• Glitter or artificial snow
• Waterproof epoxy or super glue
• Optional: food coloring
• Decorative jar lids or paint
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• Ribbon or trim for decoration
Creation Process
- Choose your container: Select a clean, clear jar with a tight-fitting lid. Test the seal by filling with water and checking for leaks.
- Prepare figurines: Choose waterproof figurines and clean them thoroughly. If painting, use waterproof acrylic paint and allow to dry completely.
- Attach figures to lid: Apply waterproof epoxy to the bottom of your figurines and attach them to the inside of the jar lid. Let dry completely (24 hours recommended).
- Mix snow globe liquid: Fill your jar almost to the top with distilled water. Add 1-2 teaspoons of glycerin (to slow the fall of glitter) and a pinch of glitter or artificial snow.
- Optional color: Add a tiny drop of food coloring if you want tinted water (blue for winter, etc.).
- Seal your globe: Apply waterproof sealant around the rim of the jar lid, then screw the lid on tightly with the figures facing down into the water.
- Test and adjust: Turn the jar upright and check for leaks. Add more sealant if needed. Make sure glitter floats and settles properly.
- Decorate exterior: Once sealed successfully, decorate the lid with ribbon, fabric, or paint to finish your creation.
For a truly unique snow globe that becomes an heirloom, customize your scene to reflect a special memory or place. Use a miniature version of your family home, a tiny wedding cake topper, or a small representation of a favorite vacation spot. You can even create a series of themed globes that tell your family's story—one for each child's birth, major milestones, or annual vacations. Consider using something unexpected in place of traditional white glitter, such as tiny gold stars for a celestial theme or blue and turquoise glitter for an underwater scene.
