Gold Leaf Frame: The Size Overlap That Prevents Cracks

A dazzling metallic mirror frame that lasts, because the leaf overlap technique keeps it from flaking off in sheets.

[#~image_alt_1~#]
Interior design

Gold leafing looks intimidating, but the entire project lives or dies on one variable: how much you overlap each sheet of leaf as you apply it. Lay the sheets edge-to-edge with no overlap and you'll get visible seams and, worse, cracking within weeks as the thin foil shifts and separates at the gaps. Overlap each sheet by about a quarter inch onto the previous one, and the leaf bonds into a single continuous surface that flexes with the frame instead of fracturing along invisible seam lines. That's the mechanical difference between a mirror frame that looks boutique for years and one that's shedding gold flakes onto your entryway console by next season.

What You'll Need

  • Thrift store mirror, wood frame, $10-15
  • Composition gold leaf sheets, one pack of 25, $9
  • Gold leaf adhesive size, small bottle, $8
  • Soft-bristle brush, for applying size, $3
  • Soft cloth or brush, for burnishing leaf, on hand
  • Sealant spray, matte or satin finish, $7
  • Painter's tape, to protect the mirror glass, $3

How to Build It

  1. Protect the mirror glass completely with painter's tape so no adhesive or leaf touches it.
  2. Clean the frame surface and sand any rough spots so the size adheres evenly.
  3. Brush a thin, even coat of gold leaf size onto one section of the frame and let it sit until tacky, usually 15-30 minutes.
  4. Lay the first sheet of leaf onto the tacky size and press gently with a soft brush to set it.
  5. Overlap each subsequent sheet by roughly a quarter inch onto the previous one — this is the step that prevents cracking and visible seams later.
  6. Burnish the entire frame with a soft cloth to smooth the leaf and remove excess flakes.
  7. Seal with a matte or satin spray sealant to lock the leaf down and prevent tarnishing.
  8. Remove the tape from the mirror glass carefully once the sealant is fully dry.
DESIGNER TIP

Skip the impulse to buy real gold leaf — composition leaf gives the same jaw-dropping metallic punch for a fraction of the price, and once it's sealed, nobody can tell the difference from three feet away.
