Apartment Win
If your front door opens straight into your living space, keys, shoes, and bags end up everywhere. This freestanding cube stack creates a tidy drop zone in about 20 minutes. It's renter-safe because nothing touches the wall: no drilling, no adhesive, and nothing to patch at move-out.
What You'll Need
- One freestanding 6-cube storage unit or three to four stackable cubes (about $30-$60)
- Two or three fabric or woven bins that fit the cubes (about $10-$20)
- A small tray for keys and wallet (about $5-$8)
- Felt furniture pads for the base, so floors stay scratch-free (about $3)
- A leaning mirror or a freestanding coat tree, optional (about $15-$30)
How to Do It
- Choose the wall space right beside your door. Clear floor space about two feet wide is plenty, and nothing gets attached to the wall.
- Stick felt pads on the bottom of the unit to protect your floor. They peel off clean when you move.
- Assemble the cubes into a low bench or a tall tower, depending on your space. Keep it stable by placing the heaviest items on the bottom.
- Slide bins into the lower cubes for shoes, bags, and seasonal items, which hides clutter instantly.
- Place the tray on top for keys, mail, and sunglasses, so your daily essentials have one home.
- Add a leaning mirror or freestanding coat tree beside it for a finished look. Both lift away with no residue when you leave.
DESIGNER TIP
Use matching bins in one color to make the stack look like a built-in. Leave one open cube for a plant or a small lamp to add warmth.
