Small Space
Tiny rental kitchens rarely have enough counter or storage space, and adding built-ins isn't an option when you're renting. A freestanding rolling cart fakes the function of a kitchen island — extra prep space, extra storage, extra everything — and rolls right out the door when you move, no landlord notification required.
What You'll Need
- 3-tier rolling utility cart with locking wheels (approx. $40-$70)
- Butcher block or bamboo cutting board to top the cart as a counter surface (approx. $15)
- Removable felt or cork shelf liner to protect the cart surfaces (approx. $6)
- Small tension rod or towel bar clip-on for the cart's side, for hanging towels or utensils (approx. $8)
- Set of stackable bins for the lower shelf (approx. $12)
How to Do It
- Choose a cart sized to slide into your dead kitchen corner or next to the fridge, leaving walkway room.
- Line each shelf with felt or cork liner to protect the metal or wood finish — peels away with no residue when you move.
- Top the cart with a cutting board or tray for a stable, knife-safe prep surface.
- Clip a small towel bar or hook rail onto the cart's side rail for hanging utensils, oven mitts, or a dish towel.
- Load the lower shelves with stackable bins to corral spices, snacks, or extra cookware.
- Roll the whole setup wherever you need extra space — prep, serving, or storage — then tuck it away when you're done.
DESIGNER TIP
Pick a cart with wheels that lock so it doubles as a stable workstation, not just a mobile shelf — you'll actually use it for chopping and mixing.
