Dorm Hack
Rental closets are often just one sad rod and a shelf, leaving you with wasted vertical space and nowhere for shoes or bags. This tension-mounted slat rail system hangs baskets and hooks wherever you need them, and lifts out completely without a trace when you move.
What You'll Need
- Tension-mounted closet rail kit (~$25) — no drilling required
- 2-3 slide-on wire baskets (~$10 each)
- Set of removable slat hooks (~$8 for a pack of 6)
- Small level to keep the rail straight (~$5, optional)
How to Do It
- Measure the closet width where you want the rail to sit, above or below the existing rod.
- Extend the tension rail between the side walls, twisting until it's snug and level.
- Test the tension by gently pulling before loading anything onto it.
- Slide wire baskets and hooks onto the rail wherever you need them.
- Load shoes, bags, or folded items into the baskets for instant organization.
- Remove the entire rail by loosening the tension when you move out, leaving no marks behind.
DESIGNER TIP
Stick to lightweight items on the slat rail — it's great for shoes and accessories, but save heavy sweaters for the main closet rod.
