No-Drill Fix
Magnetic knife strips are a kitchen-storage dream, but most require screws straight into drywall. This version mounts your magnetic strip onto a freestanding tension-fit board wedged into a cabinet gap or backsplash nook, so knives, scissors, and bottle openers stay visible and off the counter — no holes, no landlord drama.
What You'll Need
- Magnetic knife strip, adhesive-backed (~$14)
- Small tension rod or expandable shelf support (~$10)
- Removable double-sided mounting strips as backup hold (~$6)
- Microfiber cloth for surface prep
How to Do It
- Measure the cabinet gap or nook where you want the strip mounted, ensuring it's snug enough for tension pressure.
- Wedge the tension rod or expandable support into place, adjusting until it holds firm without any wall contact.
- Clean the mounting surface on the rod/support with a microfiber cloth so adhesive grips well.
- Attach the magnetic strip to the tension support using removable mounting strips, pressing firmly for 30 seconds.
- Load your knives and metal tools onto the strip, testing hold strength before fully loading.
- Remove anytime by unsticking the mounting strips and collapsing the tension rod — no residue, no marks, deposit fully intact.
DESIGNER TIP
Angle the strip slightly downward-facing so heavier knives sit lower on the magnet for extra security in earthquake-prone or high-traffic kitchens.
