Organized & Stylish: Creating Pegboard Storage Solutions

Transform any space with customizable wall storage that adapts to your needs

Colorful pegboard wall in craft room with organized tools and supplies
WEEKEND PROJECT

Pegboards have evolved far beyond their workshop origins to become versatile organizing systems for nearly any room in your home. These perforated panels create customizable storage that can be reconfigured as your needs change, keeping frequently used items visible and accessible. From practical utility in garages to stylish displays in craft rooms, offices, and kitchens, pegboards offer the perfect blend of function and flexibility while making efficient use of vertical wall space.

Materials

Pegboard sheets (standard or decorative)
1x2 or 1x3 furring strips for framework
Screws, drill, and level
Primer and paint (if desired)
Assorted pegboard hooks and accessories
Decorative trim (optional)

Method

  1. Measure and cut your pegboard to the desired size. Pre-finish with primer and paint if using standard pegboard.
  2. Create a frame with furring strips attached directly to wall studs. This creates the critical air gap behind the pegboard for hook insertion.
  3. Attach pegboard to frame using screws every 12-16 inches, ensuring the board is secure and level.
  4. Add decorative trim around the edges if desired for a more finished, furniture-like appearance.
  5. Install hooks and accessories based on your storage needs, considering how items will be used and grouped for maximum efficiency.
DESIGNER TIP

Consider your pegboard color carefully—white creates a clean backdrop that makes colorful items pop, while bold colors add personality to neutral spaces. For an upscale look, frame your pegboard with decorative molding and paint it the same color as your walls. In kitchens, arrange cooking tools based on frequency of use, with everyday items at eye level. Take photos of your ideal arrangement before rearranging, so you can easily recreate successful layouts. For craft rooms, color-code your organization by project type using colored hooks or paint small zones in different colors.
